For an overseas order, freight is almost always quoted on the gross weight, so the packing can add a surprising amount on top of the die.
Why stamping dies weigh so much
There is no single answer to how heavy a die is, because the tooling itself is almost entirely solid steel. Tool steels are dense, and the die body, punch plates, guide pillars, and base all add up quickly. Three things drive the weight more than anything else:
- Size of the part. A small connector or bracket only needs a compact die, while a large body panel needs a die assembly that can be several metres across.
- Number of stations. A single-operation die is lighter than a progressive die stamping tool that carries several stations in one assembly, or a transfer die with separate units.
- Base construction. A cast or heavy fabricated base plate is heavier and more rigid than a lighter spot-built base, and rigidity is exactly what you want for holding tight tolerances.
Realistic weight ranges by die type
To give you a rough mental picture, weights tend to fall into a few broad bands:
- Small progressive dies for electronics and small components: typically from a few hundred kilograms up to around one tonne. These are the easiest to ship and often travel fine as part of a mixed, or LCL, container.
- Medium progressive and transfer dies for everyday automotive parts: commonly in the 1 to 5 tonne range. These are the workhorses you will see on most stamping shop floors.
- Large automotive body dies: frequently 5 to 20 tonnes, and some outer-panel dies can go well beyond that. These demand cranes, flat-rack or break-bulk shipping, and careful planning.

What the shipping crate adds
Export packing is not a lightweight plastic wrapper. Dies are usually shipped in sturdy wooden crates that meet ISPM 15 standards for international wood packaging, often with a steel base frame and internal supports to stop the die shifting during transit. On a small die that crate might only add a couple of hundred kilograms, but on a large automotive die the packing steel and timber can add one tonne or more. It is also worth remembering that for LCL sea freight, the volumetric weight matters just as much as the actual weight, so a tall, bulky crate can push your billable charge up even when it is not especially heavy.
How shipping weight affects your freight cost
Sea freight for loose cargo is normally charged on whichever is greater, the weight or the volume. That is why carriers quote a weight-tonne and a measurement-tonne, typically one tonne against one cubic metre. If your die is heavy but compact, you pay by weight; if it is light but takes up a lot of space, you pay by volume.
