- Steel stamping dies for medium and small parts: typically 30 to 40 days, which covers design confirmation, machining, assembly, and initial tryout.
- Progressive dies and transfer dies with multiple stations: longer, because each station adds design and machining work.
- Casting stamping dies: around 70 days, because the casting blank itself must be produced and machined before the die can be finished.
These ranges assume the part design is finalized before the tooling order is placed. If the design is still moving, the timeline will move with it.

- Engineering changes after kickoff. Every revision to the part drawing means rework in the die design and often in the machined components. Freezing the design before the order is the single most effective way to protect your schedule.

- Machining capacity. CNC and wire EDM work is the longest part of the build. A shop with dedicated die-making capacity will move faster than one sharing machines with production orders.

Casting dies are often chosen for very large panels or for programs where the tooling will see very high production volumes, while steel dies are a faster and more economical choice for many medium and small parts.
Experienced buyers use a few practical strategies to keep tooling projects on schedule:
- Freeze the part design before placing the order. Late changes are the most common cause of missed delivery dates.
- Provide complete input data. A full set of 2D drawings, 3D data, or a physical sample lets the die shop start design work immediately instead of asking clarifying questions.
- Ask for a design-for-manufacturability review early. Catching a problem in the part design before tooling starts is far cheaper than reworking a die.
- Request milestone updates. A supplier that reports progress against design, machining, heat treatment, and assembly stages gives you early warning if anything slips.
- Consider prototype tooling for urgent programs. A soft or simplified tool can produce samples while the production die is still being built.
