When you order a checking fixture, the quality of the finished tool depends less on the factory's equipment and more on how clearly you explain what you need. A checking fixture is a custom-built inspection tool that confirms whether a manufactured part meets its dimensional and geometric specifications. Because every fixture is built around one specific part, small gaps in the information you provide can turn into expensive rework, delayed delivery, or a fixture that simply does not do its job. The good news is that communicating well is not difficult. You just need to know what to send, what to specify, and what to ask.
Send the right documents before you ask for a quote
Before a checking fixture factory can give you an accurate quote, it needs to understand the part. At minimum, prepare the following:
- A 2D drawing with all dimensions, tolerances, and GD&T callouts
- A 3D CAD model in STEP, IGES, or native format showing the nominal part geometry
- The part number, revision level, and material specification
- A physical sample or master part if one already exists
The 3D data is especially important. The fixture is built to hold the part in its nominal position, so the factory needs the exact CAD geometry to design locators, nests, and clamps. If you only send a photo or a rough sketch, the factory has to make assumptions, and assumptions are where miscommunication starts.
Define the datum strategy and locating scheme
The most important design requirement you can communicate is the datum strategy. The fixture should locate the part the same way the part is located in its final assembly, using the same datum features. Tell the factory:
- Which surfaces are the primary, secondary, and tertiary datums
- Which holes or slots should be used for locating pins
- Which features are allowed to float
- How the part is clamped in the final assembly
If your part drawing already carries GD&T, the datum structure is usually defined there. Point the factory to it explicitly and ask them to confirm the locating scheme in plain language before any metal is cut. A simple datum sketch or a marked-up screenshot is often enough to catch a misunderstanding early.
Specify the inspection requirements clearly
Beyond the part geometry, the fixture has to deliver the inspection results you actually need. Be specific about the following points:
- The tolerance values that matter for each critical feature
- Whether you need go/no-go checks, flush and feel rails, or measured readings
- Whether you need SPC ports or data collection points for statistical process control
- The fixture base size, part orientation, and how the fixture will be stored or moved
- Any special materials for the fixture body, locators, or wear surfaces
The more clearly you define these requirements, the easier it is for the factory to build a fixture that matches your inspection process. If you are not sure what you need, say so. A good checking fixture manufacturer will walk you through the options and recommend a design based on your part and your production volume.
Ask the factory the right questions
Communication is a two-way street. Before you place the order, ask the factory:
- Can you review the part and give design-for-manufacturing feedback before we approve?
- How will the fixture locate and clamp the part, and can you explain it in plain language?
- What inspection report or measurement proof will ship with the fixture?
- Will you try the fixture with a sample part before delivery?
- Who owns design revisions if something changes during tryout?
- What is included in the quote, and what is an extra charge?
These questions separate a serious checking fixture manufacturer from a supplier that simply machines parts from a drawing. A factory that asks about your part, your datum, and your inspection process before talking about price is a factory that understands the risk you are trying to remove from production.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending incomplete data: missing 3D models or unclear tolerances force the factory to guess
- Changing the part revision after the fixture is designed without telling the factory
- Forgetting to specify SPC ports or data collection points until after the fixture is built
- Assuming the factory knows your inspection process without being told
- Choosing a supplier only on price, without checking whether they can do a proper design review
